Marlins Minute: Meet of Champions Information
Hi Marlins Fans! Let’s talk Meet of Champions and All Stars!
What is Meet of Champions (MOC)?
MOC begins the post-season events for our league. It is a DIVISION-wide end of season meet where we compete against 5 other teams in our division…all at the same time! All Stars is a LEAGUE-wide meet that follows MOC.
Why should I swim in MOC?
So many reasons! It’s a fun way to end the season, a championship award is given to the team with the most points and we can show off our Marlins spirit. We have a long history of winning the championship. I think “Maplewood Marlins – 2022 Champions!” has a nice ring to it, don’t you? There is also a sportsmanship award up for grabs and we know our Marlins are the BEST at it …so why not show everyone else? In other words, WE NEED YOU!
How do you “make” it to MOC?
Just say yes and you are in! All swimmers who have participated in 2 meets this season are eligible to participate in MOC. All you need to do is “declare” your availability for MOC by Tuesday, June 21 at 10:00 a.m. and you will be placed in events.
Is MOC required?
No….but it’s fun and a super cool experience for our Marlins. You do have to participate in MOC in order to qualify for All Stars.
What strokes can I swim?
You can participate in any stroke you have a legal (non DQ) time for during the season (Meets 1 thru 5). There are no limits to the number of individual events you can participate in during MOC.
So I can swim everything?
Technically, yes! All 4 (or 5) individual events!! NEW THIS YEAR – we are allowing you to request certain events during the meet declaration process, but the coaches will have the final decision regarding the MOC meet entries. And, coaches will also assemble relays for MOC.
Wow! 5 teams at once? That sounds like a lot of swimmers!
It is, but the meets are divided by age group. The meet for swimmers in the 10 & under age groups will begin at 8:00 a.m. (arrival time TBD) and the meet for swimmers in the 11 & up age groups will begin at 2:00 p.m. (arrival time TBD). Both meets will be held at the FBISD Don Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land.
Do swimmers get awards at MOC?
Yes! The top 16 places in each event will earn an award. The top 8 swimmers get medals and places 9-16 get special MOC ribbons.
So you have to do MOC to get to All Stars?
You do! Here’s how it works….there are 4 divisions in the league (we are in division 2). The winner in each event, in each division automatically advances to All Stars (4 swimmers). Then – the next 12 fastest swimmers in each event across the league are called up for All Stars, for a total of 16 swimmers per event. So – even if you don’t win an event at MOC, a strong 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th place finish may earn you a spot at All Stars.
Are there volunteer requirements?
Yes – we will need tent/line-up parents and we have a few other roles our team has been assigned. We will send out the volunteer needs as soon as possible.
We hope that answers some questions about the Meet of Champions and All Stars and encourage you to participate! If you have additional questions, please let us know.
Go Marlins,
Susan
P.S, Happy Father's Day, Marlin Dads!
